Citi has announced the launch of its new Citi Strata℠ Elite and Citi Strata℠ Card, following a rebranding of the Citi Rewards+ Card. Applications for both cards are now open.

The Points Guy reported that existing cardholders and new applicants can expect several changes. The annual fee remains unchanged, as do the ThankYou Rewards transfer partners. However, there is a new name and card art, new bonus categories, increased earning rates on existing bonus categories, an elevated welcome bonus, and World Elite Mastercard benefits. The card will also be made almost entirely from recycled plastic.

Pam Habner, Citi's head of branded cards and lending, stated in an interview that the changes were driven by customer feedback. "It's evident that Citi leaned in on customers' desire to earn more across everyday spending categories," she said.

Existing Citi Rewards+ Card members gained access to the new Citi Strata Card on July 20, while new customers can apply starting July 27.

The new earning rates include 5 points per dollar spent on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked on cititravel.com; 3 points per dollar at supermarkets; 3 points per dollar on select transit, gas stations, and electric vehicle charging stations; 3 points per dollar in a self-select category; 2 points per dollar at restaurants; and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

A limited-time welcome bonus offers new customers 30,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 within the first three months. Additionally, there is a 0% introductory APR on balance transfers and purchases for 15 months.

Approved applicants will receive instant authorization and access to their credit card. Existing Citi Rewards+ cardholders have been automatically converted to the Citi Strata Card as of July 20.

The overhaul aims to make the card competitive with rivals like Chase Freedom Unlimited. It also introduces a self-select category for bonus points every quarter.

Habner emphasized that these changes aim to revamp the marketplace: "Therefore, the issuer simplified and increased opportunities with the Citi Strata Card in what I'd call essential categories."

Overall, this development provides a refreshing change in credit cards with improved earning rates and added value for everyday spending.
