Marcio Monzane, Regional Secretary at UNI Americas | UNI Americas

On July 27, a new union representing cleaning workers across Colombia was officially established. The organization, known as SINTRALIMCO, brings together employees from several companies that operate throughout the country, including Sodexo, Elite, and Casa Limpia.

The creation of SINTRALIMCO addresses ongoing issues faced by workers in the cleaning sector. Many have experienced exclusion, discrimination, and a lack of recognition despite their role being essential to daily life and economic activity.

Marcio Monzane, Regional Secretary of UNI Americas, commented on the significance of this development: “For UNI Americas, the creation of SINTRALIMCO represents a firm step toward dignity, justice, and the full recognition of cleaning worker’s labor rights.”

Monzane continued: “For years, these workers have been treated as disposable, with little recognition of their vital contribution to collective well-being. For us, their work is neither minor nor marginal — it is essential labor that sustains everyday life and the functioning of all economic and social activities.”

Marvin Largaespada, Regional Director of UNI Americas for Cleaning & Security, also spoke about the importance of the new union: “The formation of SINTRALIMCO is a concrete tool for organizing, collective defense, and the development of fairer working conditions for thousands of workers in the sector throughout the country.”

Largaespada added: “As the first industry union for the cleaning sector affiliated with UNI in Colombia, we welcome its creation and will support this process with strong commitment, because we believe in the power of union organizing as a path to achieving the respect, stability, and dignity that these essential workers deserve.”
