Cornelia Berger Head of Post & Logistics | UNI Global Union

UNI Global Union’s agreement with Geopost has played a role in securing a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) for workers at DPD’s Athlone, Ireland hub. The new CBA, signed on July 8, 2025, expands coverage to include day shift workers, whereas the previous contract only applied to those working nights.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU), UNI’s affiliate in Ireland, sought assistance from UNI when talks reached an impasse. Drawing on the global agreement framework between UNI and Geopost—which supports union rights and mediation during disputes—representatives from UNI, Geopost management including Executive Vice President of Human Resources & Corporate Administration Marie-Helene Michon and Senior Director Regulatory & Global Trade Affairs Olivier Tsalpatouros, as well as local DPD management and CWU leaders met in Dublin on April 10 to resolve the issues.

An outcome of these discussions was an agreement to conclude CBA negotiations for Athlone and introduce CWU at DPD Ireland’s annual franchisee meeting. This move is expected to facilitate broader union organizing within the company’s network.

“This is exactly what global agreements are meant to deliver,” said Cornelia Berger, Head of UNI Post & Logistics. “Thanks to our agreement with Geopost, we’ve unlocked real progress on the ground – more workers are now protected by a stronger collective agreement, and we’ve created a direct path to reach franchisees. This is how we grow union power: through concrete gains, backed by global agreements.”

CWU General Secretary Seán McDonagh commented: “I welcome the enhanced collective agreement concluded by the parties which builds on existing relationships and agreements. This is a positive development and represents an encouraging first step in broadening the CWU’s presence within DPD in Ireland. Decent employers recognise the value of unions and collective bargaining. This new agreement means that all staff in the Athlone hub now have the opportunity to engage in workplace democracy to protect and improve their conditions through their union.”

DPD CEO Des Travers stated: “DPD has been recognised as an employer of choice and a great place to work, and we continue to build on the great programmes we provide our staff to be the most customer-centric parcel carrier in Ireland. This agreement will enhance that message and provide choice to all our employees in Athlone. We look forward to continuing with our relationship with the CWU.”
