A delegation from UNI Americas visited Mexico from July 23 to 24 to support the country's ongoing changes in labor laws and to build stronger relationships with unions, government officials, and political leaders who are focused on workers’ rights.

During their three-day visit, the group held meetings with Marath Bolaños, Secretary of Labour and Social Welfare; Inés González, CDMX Labour Secretary; Federal Deputy Patricia Mercado; Alfredo Domínguez Marrufo, Director of the Federal Centre for Labour Conciliation and Registration. They also met with union representatives, members of Congress, and civil society organizations.

The purpose of these meetings was to understand recent legislative developments such as the Platform Law, Chair Law, Equal Pay in Sports Law, and discussions around a proposed 40-hour workweek. The delegation also shared international perspectives and emphasized Mexico’s potential role as a model for labor reform across Latin America.

“Mexico is a great example for our continent. Here, we see that with political will and strong union organisation, we can change the rules of the game in favour of workers,” said Marcio Monzane, Regional Secretary of UNI Americas.

“UNI Americas is here to support, learn from, and strengthen these cross-border alliances, with a particular emphasis on migrant labour and UNI Americas’ policy on this issue,” he added.

Trade union representatives from Brazil, the United States, El Salvador, Guatemala attended alongside leaders from the Mexican Union of Telephone Workers (STRM), which hosted the visit. STRM is recognized as an important part of current trade union developments in Mexico.

Discussions included issues relevant to global unions such as migration justice, digitalization at work, freedom of association, and building economies centered on social well-being instead of job insecurity.

The statement from UNI noted that workers throughout Latin America include both nationals and migrants who use collective bargaining through unions to defend their rights. According to UNI Americas: “This struggle is deeply connected to what is happening here. Mexico is not only changing for the better—it is setting the course, with social reforms aimed at establishing rights and social inclusion.”

The visit ended with a call for continued efforts toward building strong regional trade unionism that supports democratic values and advocates for fair treatment during economic transitions.
