Unite Here Local 1 | X

Leticia Marchán, an employee at Flying Food Group's O'Hare facility, alleges she faced harassment and intimidation from representatives of Unite Here Local 1 after leading a petition to decertify the union. Marchán has worked at the company for nearly 14 years, primarily preparing salads and cold food.

Marchán's account sheds light on ongoing concerns about union conduct and worker rights at Flying Food Group (FFG), a U.S.-based food production company serving airlines globally. In an interview, she described the workplace atmosphere and specific incidents following her efforts to remove the union from her workplace.

"Many of us employees have been paying the union since it came in, and we've never gotten any benefit from the union, but they take money from us every month," said Marchán. "The union says if we sign, they’re going to fire us, that they’re going to take us out of work. Like threats, you know? They harass you so you’ll quit. I feel like they’re watching me or keeping tabs on me."

Research from the Mackinac Center for Public Policy has documented similar frustrations among unionized employees regarding automatic deduction of dues without perceived benefits. This dissatisfaction has fueled interest in decertification efforts and "right-to-work" laws allowing workers to opt out of union membership.

"Just last week, like three or four people were outside the HR office. I passed by there, and they laughed at me and said, ‘Defeated, failed, we won, we won.' I thought they were going to hit me because they told me to leave the cafeteria," she said. "Also, two or three times, a suspicious car was parked in front of my house with someone inside. I went home and I felt like someone was following me."

Reports from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) note that workplace bullying can escalate during labor unrest periods when employees challenge established representation.

Marchán has formally filed complaints with both human resources and the union regarding these incidents. Her experience aligns with findings from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), which document instances where workers report intimidation tactics such as threats of job loss or surveillance during decertification drives.

In media accounts and legal filings, several recent unfair labor practice cases detail allegations of surveillance and intimidation that extended beyond the workplace, including follower behavior and suspicious vehicles. One example involved subcontracted workers who alleged being surveilled, denied work, and monitored by union-affiliated or management-aligned individuals, claims that mirror Marchan’s fears of being followed and observed by unknown vehicles near her home. Regulatory authorities and labor reporters view such surveillance as a deliberate intimidation strategy in union conflict contexts.
