Germany’s Lufthansa will take delivery of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner equipped with the new Allegris business class seats in September 2025, according to CEO Carsten Spohr. The announcement was made during the airline’s second-quarter earnings call.

Spohr stated that when the aircraft enters service, “a big part of the business class will be blocked.” This limitation is due to ongoing delays in certifying the new Allegris seats with US aviation authorities. As a result, Lufthansa plans to deploy the aircraft on routes where there is lower demand for business class travel, specifically between Germany and Montreal. These flights are already available for booking.

Currently, Lufthansa operates five Boeing 787-9s and has an additional 30 on order. There are reportedly 15 Dreamliners ready and stored in the United States awaiting seat certification approval. The delay centers on obtaining certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the Collins Aerospace seats installed on these jets.

During the call, Spohr said Lufthansa is working closely with Boeing, Collins Aerospace, and the FAA to resolve these issues. He expressed hope “to have all seats released to the market by the end of the year.”

Lufthansa launched its Allegris cabin upgrade program in 2022 with plans to certify and introduce it across its long-haul fleet by 2023. However, setbacks including supply chain challenges and regulatory hurdles delayed implementation—especially for Boeing 787s. The first aircraft featuring Allegris cabins—a retrofitted Airbus A350-900—entered service in May 2024 after receiving necessary certifications for Thompson Aero-built seats used on that model.

The Allegris product represents a redesign of Lufthansa’s long-haul offering across all four travel classes: first, business, premium economy, and economy. In business class specifically, there are five different seat types at varying price points. Spohr explained: “one of the big innovations of Allegris, having differently priced seats in business class. And it works not for all five the same way, but for sure, the strategy and the innovation behind it are proving right.”

Lufthansa initially aimed to retrofit its entire intercontinental fleet with Allegris cabins by late 2025 but now expects completion by late 2027. The first A350-900 fitted with Allegris entered service from Munich to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on May 1, 2024.

Despite only ten aircraft currently flying with Allegris cabins installed so far, Spohr highlighted during his remarks that this product is already delivering a double-digit yield increase.
