Spirit Airlines has reduced its peak summer schedule by 26% for the third quarter of 2025, following its exit from bankruptcy protection earlier this year. The airline underwent restructuring that involved reducing debt and securing new investment, with the goal of creating a more stable and competitive business.

Spirit was notably affected by issues related to Pratt & Whitney engines, which contributed to operational challenges. As part of its strategy moving forward, Spirit is shifting toward a hybrid carrier model. This includes changes such as reconfiguring aircraft with new seating options to increase revenue per passenger, although these adjustments are expected to raise operating costs.

The carrier's latest schedule shows an average of 616 daily movements—landings and takeoffs combined—for July through September 2025. This is down from 831 in the same period last year, representing a significant cut in flights. The reduction reflects Spirit’s decision to operate fewer aircraft by the end of the year and discontinue routes that are not financially viable.

Analysis indicates that Chicago O'Hare International Airport has dropped out of Spirit’s top ten airports due to a 40% decrease in flights there. Baltimore has entered the top ten but still saw nearly a quarter fewer flights compared to last year. Three airports among Spirit’s busiest experienced even larger declines than O'Hare, led by Los Angeles with a 45% reduction in service. However, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando—two key hubs for Spirit—saw much smaller decreases.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport stands out as an exception; flight activity there increased by 27% compared to last year, moving it up from seventh to fourth among Spirit's most-served airports for Q3. This growth comes as Spirit expanded its Detroit network from 22 routes last year to 41 now, adding destinations such as Austin, Charlotte, Memphis, Phoenix, San Diego, and San Juan while ceasing service at Chicago O'Hare.

Despite cutting overall flight numbers, Spirit will serve more airports this summer than it did last year—85 versus 82 during Q3 of 2024. The airline has discontinued service at Cap-Haïtien, Guayaquil, and Port-au-Prince but launched flights to six new cities: Birmingham (Alabama), Bucaramanga (Colombia), Chattanooga (Tennessee), Columbia (South Carolina), Lima (Peru), and Savannah (Georgia). Some destinations will be dropped later in the quarter; for example, all Seattle service will end on August 12 after nine years at that airport.

Looking ahead beyond Q3, Spirit plans further expansion with new routes scheduled for Key West and Macon later this year. The partnership with Contour Airlines is expected to play a role in these developments but details about its significance remain uncertain.
