Qatar Airways, the national airline of Qatar, continues to operate its Airbus A380 fleet as travel demand remains strong and delays in new aircraft deliveries persist. The carrier currently has eight active A380s, with two more remaining in storage since the COVID-19 pandemic. These superjumbos are configured with 517 seats across three classes: first, business, and economy.

The airline's A380s feature four Engine Alliance GP7200 engines and have a higher seating capacity compared to similar aircraft operated by Lufthansa and Etihad Airways. Although Qatar Airways initially retired its A380 fleet during the pandemic, the rapid recovery in air travel and supply chain issues affecting new jet production led to their return.

In economy class, passengers can choose from 461 seats on the lower deck or 56 seats on the upper deck. The upper deck offers a quieter environment with an eight-abreast (2-4-2) layout. Window seat passengers benefit from sidewall storage lockers, while those in row 30 enjoy extra legroom but lack access to a locker. Row 25 provides both extra legroom and a locker but is located near the onboard lounge, which may be noisy.

Business class on Qatar’s A380s uses Collins Aerospace Super Diamond reverse herringbone seats rather than the newer QSuite product found on other aircraft types in the fleet. All 48 business class seats are nearly identical; however, window seats offer additional storage bins and are generally preferred by most travelers. Seats positioned away from lavatories and galleys tend to be quieter.

First class consists of only eight open suites designed for spaciousness rather than privacy. Center suites are often chosen by couples, while window suites suit solo travelers. Row one is typically quieter due to its distance from the galley at the rear of the cabin.

Qatar Airways limits A380 deployments to high-demand routes such as Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, London Heathrow Airport, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. Unlike Emirates or Etihad Airways, Qatar does not regularly use its A380s for North American routes.

The airline operates these large aircraft mainly out of necessity while awaiting new deliveries and acquiring second-hand jets like Airbus A330s and Boeing models to meet increasing passenger demand.

"In my opinion, looking back, it was the biggest mistake we did, to purchase A380s," said former CEO Al Akbar Baker when discussing Qatar's decision to buy these planes.

Qatar Airways was founded in 1993 and is based at Doha Hamad International Airport. It is part of the oneworld alliance and is led by CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer.
