Indianapolis International Airport is expanding its domestic network with the addition of two new routes this month. Southwest Airlines has resumed flights between Indianapolis and Chicago Midway Airport, while Delta Air Lines will restart service to Raleigh–Durham International Airport next week.

Southwest Airlines returned to the Indianapolis-Chicago Midway corridor today after a nearly five-year hiatus. The airline now operates twice-daily, year-round flights on Boeing 737-700, 737-800, and 737 MAX 8 aircraft. Morning departures leave Indianapolis at 07:30 and arrive in Chicago at 07:40 as flight WN212. The return from Chicago departs at 10:00, arriving in Indianapolis at 12:05 as WN431. An evening rotation leaves Indianapolis at 16:50 (WN3074) and returns from Chicago at 20:25 (WN2303).

Mario Rodriguez of the Indianapolis Airport Authority said, "The Midway route gives Hoosier travelers more regional access and more flexibility when flying into Chicago. This route is also going to serve both business and leisure travel with more convenience, access, and connectivity across the country and beyond."

According to Flightradar24 data, the first resumed Southwest flight arrived in Chicago seven minutes behind schedule.

Delta Air Lines will resume its direct service between Indianapolis and Raleigh-Durham on August 11. The route was previously operated by Delta for over ten years before being suspended in April 2020 due to the pandemic. Beginning Monday, Endeavor Air will operate a daily round trip using a Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft under Delta’s regional brand. Flight DL5195 departs Raleigh-Durham at 17:20 and arrives in Indianapolis at 19:14; DL5193 leaves Indianapolis at 19:55 for a scheduled arrival in Raleigh-Durham at 21:39.

Data from Cirium shows that Indianapolis International Airport’s domestic network has grown over the past year. In August of this year, there are scheduled to be 8,594 internal flights—up from last August’s total of 8,011—a year-on-year increase of about seven percent. Seat capacity also increased by nearly four percent compared to last year’s numbers.

Among airlines serving Indianapolis domestically, Delta has seen the largest growth in absolute numbers of flights operated this month compared with August last year—an increase from approximately 1,683 flights to nearly two thousand monthly services.
