Christy Hoffman General Secretary | UNI Global Union

Eighty years have passed since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which resulted in the deaths of more than 200,000 people. UNI Global Union has marked this anniversary by renewing its call for peace and nuclear disarmament.

The organization’s statement comes at a time when global tensions are rising. Several countries are developing or upgrading their nuclear arsenals, contributing to concerns about a new arms race. Ongoing conflicts in regions such as Gaza and Ukraine continue to claim civilian lives through the use of advanced weaponry.

“Eighty years after one of the most devastating attacks on civilian life, we would hope the world had evolved beyond this violence. Unfortunately, it has not,” said Christy Hoffman, General Secretary of UNI Global Union. “We take this sombre anniversary to remember the lives lost and speak out for peace. We must reject weapons that threaten humanity, and we must demand justice, democracy and the dignity of life.”

UNI Global Union has been active in advocating for nuclear disarmament since its 2010 congress in Nagasaki. The group maintains that nuclear weapons are incompatible with human rights and is a member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.

“This week is a time to honour the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and their families as well as to stand with communities who continue to suffer from war,” said UNI Asia and Pacific Regional Secretary Rajendra Acharya. “A peaceful, nuclear-free future is possible – but only if we demand it.”
