Asiana Airlines has resumed Airbus A380 flights to Frankfurt Airport, marking the return of the superjumbo to Germany’s busiest airport after a five-year absence. The service between Seoul Incheon Airport and Frankfurt had previously been operated by the Airbus A350-900, but on August 7, Asiana switched to the larger A380.

The first flight using the A380 was OZ541, departing from Seoul at 10:17 and arriving in Frankfurt at 15:58, ahead of its scheduled time. This change increases capacity significantly; according to aeroLOPA data, the A380 offers 495 seats compared to the A350’s 311—a difference of 184 seats.

Alexandra Ulm, Fraport AG's Head of Traffic Development, commented on the significance of this move: "With this return, FRA is now served by three airlines operating the world’s largest passenger aircraft – a true aviation highlight! With its impressive dimensions, elegance in the skies, and engineering excellence, the A380 remains a true icon."

Aviation operations have evolved over recent years due to challenges such as pandemic recovery and restricted airspace over Russia. Despite these changes, Asiana’s decision to use its largest aircraft for this route reflects confidence in growing demand for travel between South Korea and Germany.

Frankfurt now joins Dubai International and Singapore Changi as airports served by multiple daily A380 flights. Besides Asiana Airlines’ three weekly services from Seoul, Emirates operates daily flights from Dubai with an A380 and Singapore Airlines does so from Singapore.

Fleet data indicates that Asiana currently operates six Airbus A380s with an average age just over ten years; five are active while one is undergoing maintenance. The aircraft features 12 Business Suites (serving as long-haul first class), 66 business class seats in a staggered configuration on the upper deck, and economy seating for most passengers—106 upstairs in a 2-4-2 layout and another 311 downstairs in a denser arrangement.

Frankfurt Airport remains one of Europe’s major aviation hubs. Its IATA code is FRA and it serves as a key entry point into Germany.

"With this return, FRA is now served by three airlines operating the world’s largest passenger aircraft – a true aviation highlight! With its impressive dimensions, elegance in the skies, and engineering excellence, the A380 remains a true icon." — Alexandra Ulm
