An incident involving an American Airlines passenger has drawn attention after a video surfaced showing an altercation between a passenger and a flight attendant. Peter Nguyen, an online influencer, posted footage of himself being confronted by a flight attendant after he was found attempting to vape in the aircraft lavatory during American Airlines Flight 2860 from Phoenix to San Francisco.

The video shows the flight attendant reprimanding Nguyen, who then claims assault as she appears to reach for his camera. It is unclear from the recording whether any physical contact took place.

Vaping or smoking on commercial flights is illegal under federal law in the United States. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) can impose fines up to $37,000 for such offenses, depending on factors like previous violations and cooperation with authorities. Smoking bans on domestic flights have been in place since 1990, and airlines use smoke detectors in lavatories and enforce strict penalties for violations. Passengers caught smoking can face removal from flights, bans from future travel with the airline, and denial of rebooking privileges.

American Airlines issued a statement about the incident through FOX 10 News: "A customer on American Airlines flight 2860 with service from Phoenix (PHX) to San Francisco (SFO) was removed from the aircraft upon arrival at SFO due to disruptive behavior. We thank our customers for their patience and apologize for any inconvenience.”

Nguyen is described by most sources as a self-proclaimed ‘celebrity pickleball coach’ but repeatedly told crew members he was a lawyer during the incident. He began filming before being approached by the flight attendant, which some observers suggest indicates he anticipated or intended to provoke an altercation.

Smoking onboard poses significant safety risks, including fire hazards that can threaten everyone aboard if not quickly contained. Even though vape pens or cigarettes are unlikely to cause catastrophic failures alone, they may prompt emergency landings if crews suspect mechanical issues related to smoke or fumes.

Passengers found violating no-smoking policies risk detention upon landing and could be added to no-fly lists or lose frequent flyer benefits. The level of punishment depends on factors such as prior offenses and how cooperative the passenger is with authorities.

American Airlines operates as a full-service carrier based in the United States, with major hubs including Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Miami International Airport, New York JFK Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The company is part of the oneworld alliance and led by CEO Robert Isom.
