Southwest Airlines has launched nine new routes in August, with eight starting on August 5 and another beginning August 10. Of these, four had previously been operated by the airline. Five of the newly added routes are now among Southwest's eleven shortest mainland US flights: Sarasota-Orlando, Fort Myers-Orlando, West Palm Beach-Orlando, Louisville-Nashville, and Indianapolis-Chicago Midway.

Most of the new intra-Florida connections and other short-haul links like Louisville-Nashville and Chicago Midway-Indianapolis are intended to support connectivity over key airports in Southwest’s network. These airports—Orlando, Nashville, and Chicago Midway—are among the carrier’s top nine by flight movements. The short segments primarily serve as spokes for passengers connecting to other destinations.

The route between Los Angeles International Airport and Orlando stands out as Southwest’s third-longest domestic mainland service from Los Angeles at 1,927 nautical miles each way. This makes Southwest the fifth airline to operate this city pair recently; JetBlue and Spirit both ended their services on this route in September 2023.

The following is a breakdown of the new routes:

- Fort Myers-Orlando (two daily flights), last served January 2024

- Indianapolis-Chicago Midway (two daily), last flown August 2020

- Los Angeles-Orlando (daily), not previously served

- Louisville-Nashville (daily), not previously served

- Miami-Orlando (two daily), not previously served

- Sarasota-Orlando (two daily), not previously served

- San Francisco-Austin (daily), last flown December 2019

- West Palm Beach-Orlando (two daily), last flown April 2002

- Phoenix-Santa Barbara (weekly from August 10), not previously served

Sarasota-Orlando is now Southwest's second-shortest mainland route at just 90 nautical miles each way. If Hawaii were included in the ranking, Sarasota-Orlando would be fifth-shortest systemwide.

Fort Myers-Orlando returns for its third stint after previous runs from October 2005-November 2012 and November 2020-January 2024. According to US Department of Transportation data for 2023, this route saw Southwest carry about 72,400 round-trip passengers but only filled about 62% of seats compared to an average load factor of around 80% across all its flights that year. Most travelers—93%—connected onward through Orlando.

Phoenix-Santa Barbara is unique among these additions as it will be operated weekly on Sundays. This schedule is part of a broader pattern; Cirium Diio data indicates that out of more than 820 routes scheduled by Southwest in August, only about thirty-one will have just one weekly frequency.

Santa Barbara-Phoenix faces competition from American Airlines’ three daily flights on similar aircraft types.

Southwest Airlines remains a major low-cost carrier headquartered in the United States with primary hubs including Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Dallas Love Field, Denver International Airport, Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Houston Hobby Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Chicago Midway International Airport, Oakland International Airport, Orlando International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The company was founded in 1967 and is led by CEO Robert Jordan.

"Will it be the third time lucky for Southwest?"
