JetBlue Airways has taken further steps to retire its Embraer E190 fleet as it transitions to the Airbus A220. The airline recently sold 23 General Electric CF34 engines to aftermarket companies, according to Aviation Week. Of these, Werner Aero acquired 12 engines, while BeauTech Power Systems purchased 11. In addition, JetBlue sold 13 Embraer E190s with a total of 34 CF34 engines to aircraft lessor Azorra. Deliveries began in July and are expected to continue through mid-2026.

JetBlue plans to end operations of the Embraer E190 by early September. The carrier currently operates nine E190s as of August 2025 and intends for its future fleet to consist mainly of Airbus A220-300 and A320 family aircraft. This move follows JetBlue's gradual retirement of the E190 type since 2022, after having operated up to 60 units at one point.

Werner Aero will receive six Embraer E190 airframes along with the engines from JetBlue. The acquisition is expected to strengthen Werner Aero’s maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities amid ongoing supply chain challenges in aviation parts and services.

"Werner Aero's acquisition of E190 airframes and E190 engines will significantly boost its presence in the MRO as well as the second-hand regional jet market," according to industry sources cited in the report.

Azorra’s purchase expands its portfolio with more flexible solutions for airlines seeking additional capacity without long wait times for new aircraft deliveries. The deal is seen by some analysts as a sign of continued demand for used Embraer jets.

"The same logic can be applied to Azorra's acquisition of the former JetBlue Embraers. These planes will further deepen the lessor's aircraft portfolio and reinforce its offering of flexible, near-term solutions for operators looking to add capacity without being placed on a multi-year long waiting list."

BeauTech Power Systems’ engine acquisition positions it well amid heightened demand for replacement engines due to extended service lives of older jets and tight MRO schedules globally.

"For BeauTech Power Systems, the purchase of new engines solidifies the company's position in meeting urgent demand for engines. As MRO capacity continues to be strained and with many operators having postponed retirements of older aircraft, companies like BeauTech are as important as ever."

JetBlue’s shift towards an all-Airbus narrowbody fleet reflects broader industry trends favoring fuel efficiency and commonality across models. Currently operating 50 Airbus A220-300s—with another 50 on order—JetBlue expects cost savings from lower fuel burn rates compared with older models such as the E190. The airline also operates significant numbers of Airbus A320-200s (129), A321-200s (63), and A321neo/A321LRs (37).

The transition comes at a time when global airlines face lengthy waits for new jets due to production backlogs; used regional jets like the E190 remain attractive options for carriers needing quick capacity additions.

With over 500 units produced, the Embraer E190 remains one of the most widely used variants within its family—a factor contributing both to robust second-hand market interest and ongoing aftermarket support needs.
