Korean Air has revised its winter schedule for flights between Seoul and the United States, reversing earlier plans to use the Boeing 747-8 on both daily services to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). Instead, the airline will continue operating one daily flight with an Airbus A380 and another with a Boeing 777-300ER, according to data from aviation analytics company Cirium.

The change also affects Korean Air’s Los Angeles route. The carrier will reduce its Airbus A380 service from 14 to seven weekly flights starting in November 2025. The extra A380 capacity will be shifted to New York JFK, where it will replace the previously planned 747-8i operations.

Previously, Korean Air had scheduled both of its daily Incheon International Airport (ICN) to JFK flights with the Boeing 747-8 for this winter season. With this adjustment, the airline maintains its current summer arrangement: one daily A380 flight departing ICN at 10:00 and arriving at JFK at 11:10 (KE81), and a second daily service using a Boeing 777-300ER departing ICN at 19:30 and arriving at JFK at 21:00 (KE85). Return flights from JFK follow similar patterns.

On the Los Angeles route, which is among Korean Air’s busiest long-haul services, only one of two daily flights will now use the A380 during winter; the other will operate with a Boeing 747-8. Earlier in the year, Simple Flying reported that Korean Air increased A380 frequencies on this route for summer but planned reductions again by autumn.

Korean Air continues to operate both Airbus A380s and Boeing 747-8s in its long-haul fleet due to delays in receiving new aircraft intended as replacements. The airline began flying the A380 in 2011 and currently lists four of six units as active. Its five passenger-configured Boeing 747-8s have been in service since 2016.

The company has stated that once new aircraft arrive—including orders for Boeing 777X and Boeing 787 Dreamliner models—it will start retiring older widebodies like the A380s and 747-8s. However, first deliveries of these replacements may not occur until at least 2028.

Recent fleet developments include delivery of two Airbus A350-900s at the end of 2024, which entered commercial service in March. Korean Air also has an outstanding order for twenty-seven Airbus A350-1000s.

Korean Air is a full-service carrier based at Incheon International Airport, founded in 1969, and is part of the SkyTeam alliance under CEO Walter Cho.
