Spirit Airlines will add two new Caribbean routes from its hub at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport later this year. The airline announced it will begin service to Belize City, Belize, starting Nov. 21, with flights operating three times a week on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. Service to Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, will start Dec. 4 and also run three times weekly on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

"Belize City is a new dot on Spirit's route map. It represents the sixth new destination the airline has added so far this year, following Key West, Florida; Macon and Savannah, Georgia; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Columbia, South Carolina."

With these additions, Spirit expects to operate more than 100 peak-day departures to over 70 destinations from Fort Lauderdale by the end of the year.

Although Belize City is a new destination for Spirit Airlines itself, Southwest Airlines previously operated this route from Fort Lauderdale until April 2020 but discontinued it during the pandemic and has not resumed service since then. Similarly, Spirit last flew between Fort Lauderdale and Owen Roberts International Airport in Grand Cayman nearly two decades ago; it briefly operated flights between February 2006 and September 2008.

Since that time, both Southwest and JetBlue have provided service from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Cayman. JetBlue last flew the route in April 2022 while Southwest ended its flights in June of last year.

"While Spirit itself has been undergoing a massive business transformation as it emerges from bankruptcy, so too are Southwest and JetBlue, two of the other major airline competitors in Fort Lauderdale."

The new routes are aimed at leisure travelers in South Florida who may be seeking alternatives to American Airlines' flights out of Miami International Airport.

"Spirit seemingly senses an opportunity to grow at its hometown airport at the expense of Southwest and JetBlue, and it's doing so with these new leisure-oriented routes. These routes will also appeal to those based in South Florida looking for an alternative option to flying American Airlines from Miami International Airport (MIA)."

Flights are now available for booking with one-way fares starting at $85 to Belize City and $65 to Grand Cayman.
