Amtrak will introduce its next-generation Acela trainsets on August 28, according to an announcement made Thursday. The new trains represent a significant upgrade for passengers and mark a milestone for Amtrak after several years of delays.

The initial rollout will include five new trainsets. Amtrak stated that some Acela services will continue to use the current equipment in the coming months as more new trains are gradually added to the fleet. In total, 28 new Acela trains are expected to enter service by 2027.

While Amtrak did not provide a detailed deployment schedule, it confirmed that travelers can identify which departures use the new trainsets during the booking process. Passengers are advised to check their seat assignments on the Amtrak app to determine if they are booked on one of the updated trains.

The next-generation Acela trains, built by Alstom, will operate along the Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C., and Boston. These trains feature modernized seats and cabins, high-speed 5G Wi-Fi, individual power outlets, and reading lights. The new fleet also offers 27% more seating per departure compared to existing trains, which Amtrak says will allow for expanded weekday and weekend schedules.

"Despite the delays, this is exciting news for travelers who frequently ride the rails of the Northeast Corridor," according to Amtrak.

The Points Guy previewed these trains when they were first tested in 2022. Although Amtrak initially planned for a spring 2025 launch as testing concluded last year, those plans were postponed until now.

Further updates about the deployment schedule are expected soon.
