On August 10, a Delta Air Lines Boeing 757-200 made contact with the wingtip of a stationary Airbus A350 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The incident took place during pushback as the 757 was preparing to depart for Guatemala City in the morning. Delta confirmed the event and stated that it will work with authorities during the investigation.

No injuries were reported, and operational delays were minor. Passengers were quickly reaccommodated onto another aircraft, and initial assessments indicated only minor damage to the planes involved. This incident adds to a series of recent ground collisions, prompting airlines and regulators to review procedures related to ramp safety and spacing.

The flight involved was Delta DL1830, operated by N695DL, a Boeing 757-200 carrying 192 passengers and six crew members. It struck N569DZ, an Airbus A350-900 parked after arriving from Rome. After returning to the gate, all occupants disembarked safely and continued their journey on another Boeing 757 later that afternoon. Airport operations remained unaffected, with N695DL returning to service the next day while N569DZ remains grounded for repairs.

Delta emphasized that operational impact was minimal in this case. The affected A350 is one of the last "35L" aircraft in Delta's fleet as the airline continues its reconfiguration program.

Similar incidents have occurred recently. In September 2024, another collision happened at Atlanta when a Delta Airbus A350-900 taxiing for departure struck an Endeavor Air Bombardier CRJ-900’s tail, resulting in significant damage but no injuries. Both flights experienced delays and required extensive repairs.

In February 2024 at Boston Logan International Airport, two JetBlue Airbus A321s collided while maneuvering near a deicing pad. Although there were no injuries reported, both flights faced delays and passengers had to be transferred to other planes.

Delta has committed to cooperating fully with both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigations into how Sunday’s incident occurred. Unlike some previous cases involving taxiing aircraft, this situation involved a pushback operation where one plane hit another parked at an adjacent gate. Investigators are expected to focus on ramp procedures rather than pilot or air traffic control actions.

According to reports from WSB Atlanta, pilots noted insufficient spacing between gates for accommodating both a Boeing 757 and an Airbus A350 simultaneously—a potential factor under review by investigators.

Airlines may need to consider new procedures or technology investments aimed at improving ramp safety in response to these incidents; whether such changes will be mandated by regulators or adopted voluntarily remains unclear.
