Ryanair Boeing 737 escorted by German fighter jets after security alert

"Buzz, the Polish charter airline, was advised of a possible security issue on a Buzz flight FR9962 from Sofia to London Stansted on Monday, August 11. This issue was quickly resolved and de-escalated, which allowed the flight to continue on to London Stansted, where it landed on time, and passengers disembarked normally."

The Aviation Herald reported that there were 174 people onboard out of a possible 189 seats. The aircraft was intercepted by two German Eurofighter Typhoon jets as it entered German airspace and remained under escort until reaching Dutch airspace.

Incidents involving military escorts for Ryanair flights have occurred before. In July 2020, a Ryanair plane flying from Krakow to Dublin diverted to London following a bomb threat and was escorted by RAF Eurofighter Typhoons. The following month saw another Ryanair Group flight—operated by Lauda Europe—escorted into London Stansted after a suspicious package was found onboard.

A notable case in May 2021 involved another Buzz-operated Ryanair flight that was diverted from Athens to Vilnius under escort from a Belarusian MiG-29 jet after an alleged bomb threat. It later emerged that Belarusian authorities orchestrated the diversion to arrest an opposition activist and his partner.
