Passengers arriving from Seoul’s Incheon International Airport (ICN) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) on Delta Air Lines will now have a more streamlined experience when connecting to other flights. Delta announced that these travelers no longer need to wait for and recheck their luggage after clearing passport control; instead, checked bags will automatically transfer to the next flight, similar to domestic connections. The airline estimates this change could save passengers an average of 25 minutes during layovers.

This update follows recent adjustments in U.S. airport security protocols for certain international arrivals. In recent months, the U.S. has relaxed baggage and security requirements for passengers flying from countries like the United Kingdom and Australia into major hubs such as Atlanta and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). For example, Delta and Virgin Atlantic recently removed the bag and security recheck requirements for passengers connecting in Atlanta after inbound flights from London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR). American Airlines also began a “one-stop security” trial at DFW for arrivals from LHR.

Despite this new convenience for travelers from South Korea, they are still required to reclear security before boarding their next flight in Atlanta; only their baggage process is simplified at this stage.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), working with its South Korean counterparts, uses advanced technology as part of this process. South Korean officials send TSA agents X-ray images of passenger bags taken at ICN checkpoints while travelers are en route to the U.S., allowing TSA staff to review them ahead of arrival.

“By leveraging advanced technology and enhancing our processes, we are driving innovation in air travel that adds an extra layer of security while streamlining the entry process for international travel,” said Diane Sabatino, acting executive assistant commissioner of operations at U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

These updated protocols also apply to passengers flying on Korean Air—Delta’s SkyTeam alliance partner—which operates flights between Seoul and Atlanta.

Currently, one-stop programs are available on select routes:

- Passengers arriving from London can skip both bag claim/recheck and additional security screening when connecting through Atlanta or Dallas.

- Travelers coming from Seoul or Sydney must still clear security but benefit from automatic baggage transfers upon arrival in Atlanta or Los Angeles, respectively.

- Outbound passengers traveling from Atlanta or Dallas to London can skip a secondary security check at Heathrow.

U.S. authorities hope these partnerships with foreign airports will expand further, reducing connection times for more international flyers in the future. Delta stated it aims eventually to remove even the remaining post-arrival security step for Seoul–Atlanta connections.
