Some flights at Porto Airport were diverted on August 10, 2025, after a Ryanair-operated Boeing 737 declared an emergency when the captain lost consciousness during the approach to the airport. The flight, identified as FR4587 from Barcelona-El Prat Airport to Porto, was being operated by an Air Malta Boeing 737 on behalf of Ryanair.
The incident took place as the aircraft was preparing to land in Porto. According to The Aviation Herald, the first officer declared a Mayday and informed air traffic controllers that the captain had become unconscious and was removed from the cockpit. The first officer also stated that the plane would not be able to vacate the runway without assistance and requested a tow truck upon landing.
A source from Portugal’s National Institute of Medical Emergencies (INEM) confirmed that they received an alert at 08:19 indicating that the pilot had suffered “a rapidly recovering syncope.” Emergency services, including an ambulance from Moreira da Maia Fire Department and a Medical, Emergency, and Resuscitation Vehicle from Pedro Hispano Hospital, responded to the airport. Upon arrival, paramedics checked on the captain who declined transportation to a hospital.
