Airline Ratings | Airline Ratings

With the rise of low-cost carriers in Asia, travelers are increasingly comparing options for flights between Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. Two prominent airlines on this route are HK Express and AirAsia. HK Express operates from Kuala Lumpur Subang Airport (SZB), while AirAsia departs from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Both airlines land at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).

A recent review compared return flights for both airlines scheduled for early November. For HK Express, the outbound flight leaves SZB at 21:30 and arrives in Hong Kong at 01:45. The return journey departs HKG at 16:20, landing back in Kuala Lumpur at 20:30. The total price, including a 20kg checked bag, carry-on baggage, pre-ordered meal with water, and seat selection, was calculated at 1,328 MYR (2,476 HKD or $481 AUD).

AirAsia offers two outbound departures from KLIA—one at 07:20 arriving in Hong Kong at 11:15 and another at 13:30 arriving at 17:30. Return options include flights leaving HKG at either noon or early evening. AirAsia’s bundle includes a meal, drink, checked baggage allowance of 20kg, and seat selection. The total fare amounted to 1,337 MYR (2,493 HKD or $484 AUD).

Both airlines use Airbus A320 aircraft with similar seating arrangements—28 inches of pitch and an 18-inch width. Neither airline provides complimentary amenity kits or inflight entertainment such as Wi-Fi or power outlets.

In terms of safety ratings, both carriers have achieved a perfect score of seven out of seven. Notably, HK Express was named the world’s safest low-cost airline in 2025; however, neither airline has completed AirlineRatings’ onboard audit required for a higher “7-star-plus” rating.

"HK Express was named the world’s safest low-cost airline in 2025," according to the report.

The main distinction between these two services is the departure airport location—Subang is closer to central Kuala Lumpur and generally less crowded than KLIA. This may offer passengers a more efficient airport experience.

"For this author, the combination of Subang’s convenience and HK Express’s title as the world’s safest low-cost airline makes it my top pick. However, if I needed a daytime arrival into Hong Kong and the price remained the same, I would choose AirAsia."
