Southwest Airlines has announced the launch of at least 20 new routes and the addition of Knoxville as a new city in its network, with services set to begin in early March 2025. Among these, three particularly short routes have drawn attention: Milwaukee-Chicago Midway, Knoxville-Nashville, and Tucson-Phoenix. These routes are designed mainly for transit traffic through some of Southwest’s busiest operational hubs.

The new Milwaukee to Chicago Midway route is notable for its brevity, measuring just 70 nautical miles (120 kilometers) each way. This makes it Southwest's second-shortest route after Colorado Springs-Denver, which covers 63 nautical miles. Previously, other carriers such as Midway Connection and ATA Connection had operated this link years ago.

In a statement from 2009, Southwest referred to Milwaukee as "Chicago's third airport." Now the airline will operate twice-daily flights between the two airports starting March 5. Departures from Milwaukee are scheduled for early morning and late afternoon, while flights from Midway will leave mid-morning and late evening.

According to U.S. Department of Transportation data for the year ending May 2025, approximately 13 local passengers traveled daily between Milwaukee and Chicago’s airports. The primary purpose of Southwest’s service is to facilitate onward connections over Midway Airport. Cirium Diio data shows that Midway ranks as Southwest’s fourth-busiest airport by daily aircraft movements; it averages about 382 takeoffs or landings per day with flights to roughly 80 destinations.

Other new routes launching in March include additional short-haul services such as Dallas Love-Oklahoma City (twice-daily), Knoxville-Nashville (daily), and Phoenix-Tucson (twice-daily). The airline will also begin serving Knoxville with flights to Baltimore, Dallas Love Field, and Orlando. Half of these newly announced routes have previously been served by Southwest jets.

The carrier’s shortest route remains Colorado Springs-Denver, operated since March 2021. In the year leading up to March 2025, DOT figures show that nearly all passengers on this segment connected onward via Denver—Southwest’s busiest hub with an average of 494 daily operations—and filled about three-quarters of available seats.

Southwest Airlines operates as a low-cost carrier and maintains hubs at several major U.S. airports including Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport; Dallas Love Field; Denver International Airport; Harry Reid International Airport; Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport; Houston Hobby Airport; Los Angeles International Airport; Midway International Airport; Oakland International Airport; Orlando International Airport; and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Founded in 1967, its IATA code is WN and ICAO code is SWA.
