Utah has experienced notable population growth in recent years, with over 3.5 million residents as of 2025, representing a nearly 20% increase over the last four years. The Wasatch Front, which includes Provo, Ogden, and Salt Lake City, is home to most of the state's population. Salt Lake City is the state capital and largest city, with a population of 1.2 million.

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) has long been the primary air travel hub for Utah and neighboring states due to its size and infrastructure. However, Provo Municipal Airport (PVU) has seen significant expansion and increased commercial service in recent years.

Before 2005, Provo Airport was primarily used for general aviation by local operators. The opening of an air traffic control tower in 2005 marked a shift toward more regulated operations. In 2011, a new terminal area was constructed to accommodate Transportation Security Administration equipment for passenger screening. That same year, Frontier Airlines began daily flights to Denver—the first commercial service at PVU in over three decades.

Allegiant Air started operating from Provo in 2013 with flights to Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona and later added routes to Oakland and Los Angeles. Breeze Airways launched several routes from Provo in 2022 and established its Utah operating base there. American Airlines began service at PVU in October 2024.

Provo’s new terminal opened in July 2022 after a $65 million investment funded by the FAA, the state of Utah, and Provo City. The facility initially included four commercial gates, baggage carousels, jetways, on-site car rentals, food options, and improved curb-to-gate access. Two main runways support airport operations: Runway 13/31 (8,603 feet) and Runway 18/36 (6,628 feet), both surfaced with asphalt.

The opening of the modern terminal led Breeze Airways to add five new routes from Provo that year; Allegiant Air also expanded its presence by investing $95 million and establishing a four-aircraft base at PVU. Utah County committed $78 million for further expansion beginning April 2025—a project that will extend the apron by year-end and expand gates from four to ten by late 2028. Upgrades will include improved ticketing areas and customs-capable gates for international travel.

Currently, two fixed-base operators—Duncan Aviation and Signature Flight Support—are based at PVU alongside Utah Valley University’s flight school and various private aircraft owners. Commercially, American Airlines operates regional American Eagle services with daily flights to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and three daily flights to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). Allegiant Air serves eight destinations from Provo (with seasonal service to Orlando Sanford International), while Breeze Airways offers seven destinations with plans for additional routes starting March 2026.

In contrast, Salt Lake City International Airport remains Utah’s busiest airport with nearly 350 departures per day serving almost 100 destinations worldwide. SLC was established as Woodward Field in 1911 and grew into a major aviation hub after Delta Air Lines designated it as a hub during the late twentieth century—a status reinforced by a $4.1 billion redevelopment project launched in 2020.

In 2024 alone, SLC handled over 28 million passengers—a year-over-year increase of more than five percent—and saw about 328,000 takeoffs and landings that year. Delta accounts for roughly seventy percent of SLC’s total traffic; its most frequent destination is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). Other key domestic destinations include Los Angeles; Seattle-Tacoma; Las Vegas; San Diego; Phoenix; as well as international cities such as Amsterdam; Paris; London; Cancún; Los Cabos; Puerto Vallarta; Mexico City; Calgary; Vancouver; Incheon.

SLC hosts fourteen different carriers including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Aeroméxico​​​​​‌, Frontier Airlines‌‌, Hawaiian Airlines‌‌, JetBlue‌‌, JSX‌‌, Southwest Airlines‌‌, Spirit Airlines‌‌, United Airlines‌‌ along with cargo operators like Alpine Air Express‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌, DHL Aviation‌‌‌‌‌‌‌, FedEx Express‌‌‌‌‌‌‌, Gem Air‌‌‌‌‌‌‌, UPS Airlines‌‌.

Some travelers prefer flying out of Provo due to its proximity for Utah County residents—avoiding longer drives to SLC—as well as shorter security lines and less congestion at check-in or parking facilities compared to SLC’s larger scale operations. For some Salt Lake City residents too, Provo offers convenience through cheaper parking fees or fewer crowds despite being farther away geographically.

Most commercial flights out of PVU are operated by budget carriers like Allegiant or Breeze offering non-stop leisure routes tailored around high-demand vacation or business destinations such as Phoenix‍‍, Dallas‍‍, Orlando‍‍, San Diego‍‍, Nashville‍‍, San Francisco‍. While SLC provides broader connectivity including international flights—and may have higher ticket prices depending on demand—Provo’s smaller size enables easier navigation through terminals plus quicker boarding or deplaning processes.

While Salt Lake City International remains dominant within Utah's air travel landscape due to volume and connectivity‍‍, Provo Municipal Airport continues attracting passengers seeking alternatives based on location convenience or cost considerations.
