Joby Aviation has conducted its first piloted flight of an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi between two public airports in California. The company’s aircraft traveled 10 nautical miles from Marina Municipal Airport to Monterey Regional Airport on August 13, 2025, completing the journey in about 12 minutes. The flight included a five-minute holding pattern at Monterey to accommodate air traffic spacing.
This marks the first time a piloted eVTOL vehicle has flown from one public airport to another in FAA-controlled airspace alongside other aircraft. Meeting this requirement is part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s certification process for new aircraft types.
During the test, Joby’s eVTOL demonstrated vertical takeoff and landing, transitioned to wingborne flight, and operated under standard air traffic control procedures used by commercial airlines. The company also provided full ground support operations at Monterey Regional Airport, away from its base at Marina Municipal.
