Arriving early at the airport does not always guarantee a smooth start to a trip, as long security lines can quickly add stress to the travel experience. A recent analysis by Bounce reviewed airports across the United States to identify those with the longest wait times for both airport security and passport control.

Major U.S. airports, particularly large hubs, are often cited for lengthy wait times, which can vary depending on travel season and public holidays when passenger numbers increase. The report notes that understanding these trends may help travelers plan better and allocate enough time for security checks before their flights.

To reduce time spent in line, passengers are encouraged to consider trusted traveler programs such as TSA PreCheck and Global Entry. TSA PreCheck allows members to keep shoes, belts, and jackets on during screening while leaving laptops and liquids in their bags. Global Entry expedites customs and immigration processing for returning international travelers. Additional strategies include wearing slip-on shoes, avoiding heavy clothing or jewelry, packing efficiently with easily accessible electronics and liquids, keeping travel documents ready, being familiar with airport layouts, traveling outside peak hours—such as midday or late evenings mid-week—and maintaining patience with security staff.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York is among the busiest airports in North America. It serves 90 airlines with nonstop service worldwide and is located 16 miles from downtown Manhattan. Passengers at JFK experience an average of 15 minutes and five seconds at security checkpoints plus 24 minutes and 43 seconds at passport control—a combined total of nearly 40 minutes. The airport is a hub for American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, a focus city for JetBlue, and hosts Norse Atlantic Airways’ operations base.

Orlando International Airport (MCO), Florida’s busiest airport and an operating base for several low-cost carriers including Breeze Airways, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Spirit Airlines, handles more than 1,000 daily flights across 170 destinations served by 40 airlines. Average TSA wait times reach 15 minutes and 34 seconds; passport control adds another 24 minutes and 42 seconds—totaling over 39 minutes from entry to clearance.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), Illinois’ busiest gateway located about 17 miles from Chicago’s business district ("the Loop"), offers nonstop flights to almost 250 global destinations. Passengers spend an average of nearly 12 minutes at security plus just under 26 minutes at passport control—about a combined total of almost 38 minutes.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), California’s primary air gateway situated roughly 18 miles from downtown Los Angeles near Santa Monica and Venice Beach attractions, reports average wait times of just over eleven-and-a-half minutes for security checks plus almost twenty-four minutes at passport control—for a total process time exceeding thirty-five minutes.

Other major U.S. airports also feature notable wait times: Austin–Bergstrom International Airport averages over fifteen-and-a-half minutes at security along with nearly twenty additional minutes for passport control; Miami International Airport averages just under fifteen minutes through security plus about twenty more at passport control; San Francisco International Airport sees travelers waiting close to thirteen minutes at security paired with around twenty-one additional minutes clearing passports.

These findings underscore the importance of preparation when flying through some of the nation’s largest air travel hubs.
