A United Airlines Boeing 787-9 operating flight UA1122 from Newark Liberty International Airport to Cape Town was forced to return to its departure airport on August 3rd due to a reported issue with the aircraft's spoiler system. The incident occurred after the aircraft had already begun crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

According to reports, the crew identified a problem with one of the spoilers and made the decision to request a return to Newark for safety reasons. Spoilers are control surfaces on an aircraft's wings that help slow down or descend the plane by disrupting airflow.

There were no reports of injuries among passengers or crew during the incident. United Airlines has not released additional details about maintenance actions taken following the aircraft's return.
