Since 2019, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has seen at least nine international airlines end service or announce plans to do so. The latest is BermudAir, which recently ceased flights to the airport. The carrier had launched its Fort Lauderdale route in September 2023 with six weekly flights using Embraer E175 aircraft configured initially for all-business class. Soon after, the airline switched to include economy seating and reduced frequencies over time. By 2025, service was down to once a week before being suspended altogether on July 25.

BermudAir has also announced it will stop flying to Charleston, Hartford, and Westchester, according to Aeroroutes. The airline is shifting its focus toward New York LaGuardia and Newark airports. Reports from the Royal Gazette indicate that BermudAir owes millions of dollars to Skyport, operator of Bermuda's L.F. Wade International Airport, and is facing legal action over unpaid fees.

El Al Israel Airlines will also end its regular Fort Lauderdale service next year. "The Israeli flag carrier originally served Fort Lauderdale in September/October 2023, although this was only for Jewish High Holidays. Its first regular service occurred in April 2024, since which it has operated twice-weekly year-round. Flights have nearly always been on the 238-seat Boeing 787-8, which is its lowest-capacity widebody," the release stated.

El Al's decision comes despite strong demand: between May 2024 and April 2025, U.S. Department of Transportation data showed El Al filled more than 93% of available seats on its Fort Lauderdale route—similar to its Miami operations. In winter, El Al will reduce Fort Lauderdale flights to Mondays only before ending them entirely after April 13, 2026. Afterward, it will increase frequency at Miami International Airport from five to six weekly flights.

Other international carriers that have left Fort Lauderdale since 2019 include Avianca El Salvador (which will consolidate at Miami), British Airways (which moved operations to Miami after competing with Norwegian), Emirates (which also shifted service to Miami due in part to higher international recognition and possibly better freight handling), Norse Atlantic (moved to Miami), Norwegian (ended all long-haul flights), Sunwing (now part of WestJet), Swoop (merged into WestJet), and TAME (now defunct).

Emirates operated out of Fort Lauderdale from 2016 until moving in 2020 due partly to poor passenger loads—averaging just a 74% load factor—and below-average yields compared with other routes; Miami offers greater global visibility for airlines despite higher costs.

Fort Lauderdale remains an important hub for JetBlue as its third most-served airport nationally but continues facing challenges retaining long-haul international carriers seeking consolidation or improved financial performance elsewhere.
