Southwest Airlines is making significant changes to its route network as part of a broader effort to improve financial performance and remain competitive. The airline, which has recently introduced new fees for checked bags, begun offering overnight flights, and announced plans for assigned seating and extra-legroom charges, will discontinue 29 routes starting in March next year.

According to the airline, “66 seasonal routes have been added to our network starting in March.” However, Southwest did not confirm whether any of the discontinued routes would become seasonal; instead, they have simply been removed from the schedule.

Nearly half of the affected routes are from Denver and St. Louis. Some cuts were anticipated due to overlapping service with other cities or the reintroduction of flights on alternative routes. For example, St. Louis-Des Moines and St. Louis-Wichita are being dropped as Southwest restarts service between St. Louis and Chicago Midway. Similarly, St. Louis-Oklahoma City is ending as Dallas Love Field flights resume, while St. Louis-Little Rock will be replaced by new Nashville service.

Denver-Providence stands out among the cuts at 1,509 nautical miles each way—the second-longest domestic route Southwest operated from Denver before this decision. Data shows that in the 12 months leading up to May 2025, Southwest carried about 57,000 round-trip passengers on this route with an average load factor of 81%. About 55% of those passengers connected onward via Denver.

Other airports losing multiple services include Houston Hobby, Las Vegas, Oakland, Phoenix, Sacramento, and San Jose. Notably, San Jose-Kahului (Hawaii) will end daily service after August 4 next year but is expected to return seasonally beginning October 4.

Atlanta is also seeing notable reductions as Southwest continues a trend of cutting back in that market in favor of focusing transit operations through Nashville. The carrier will drop Atlanta-New York LaGuardia (which had up to four daily flights) and Atlanta-Raleigh/Durham among others. By March 2026, Atlanta departures will be down by 43% compared to March 2025 and by 57% versus March 2024.

The full list of eliminated routes includes both year-round and nearly year-round services across various frequency levels.

Southwest Airlines operates as a low-cost carrier with major hubs including Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport; Dallas Love Field; Denver International Airport; Harry Reid International Airport (Las Vegas); Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport; Houston Hobby Airport; Los Angeles International Airport; Midway International Airport (Chicago); Oakland International Airport; Orlando International Airport; and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The company was founded in 1967.
