American Airlines, one of the major US carriers, operates a significant fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft for its long-haul international routes. The airline's 777 family makes up more than half of its widebody fleet, alongside the Boeing 787 series. American currently flies 67 Boeing 777s, including both the 777-200ER and the larger 777-300ER models.

The 47 Boeing 777-200ERs in American's fleet were delivered between 1999 and 2003, with two additional planes acquired in 2006. The airline received its first 777-300ERs between 2012 and 2016, becoming the first US operator of this variant. These aircraft are based at key hubs such as New York JFK, Chicago O'Hare, Charlotte, Miami, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Los Angeles.

Onboard the Boeing 777-300ER, American Airlines offers an international first-class product known as 'Flagship First.' However, this cabin has been criticized for being outdated and lacking privacy. "There is no doubt, however, that the product is roomier than business class, with more personalized service and upgraded amenities." The first-class section features eight suites across two rows. Row two is considered quieter due to its location away from the galley and lavatories.

The airline plans to phase out Flagship First as part of a cabin update project called 'Project Olympus.' After reconfiguration, each updated aircraft will have a total of 330 seats—an increase from previous layouts—including new business class suites with doors.

Business class on American's Boeing 777s comes in three types depending on the model. On the 777-300ERs, Safran Cirrus II reverse herringbone seats are used. Rows three and four form a mini-cabin offering more privacy for travelers. On most of the airline's Boeing 777-200ERs (28 out of 47), Collins Super Diamond seats are installed; these are similar to Cirrus II but have fixed screens instead of retractable ones. The remaining Boeing 777-200ERs use Safran Concept D seats unique to American Airlines; odd-numbered rows face rearwards and center seats in these rows are preferred by couples due to their proximity.

Premium economy seating is consistent across all American’s Boeing 777 aircraft. Both models use Collins Aerospace MiQ recliners arranged eight-abreast. The front row seats offer extra legroom: row thirteen on the Boeing 777-200ER and row sixteen on the Boeing 777-300ER (though these do not have windows). Proximity to lavatories varies between models; row thirteen on the -200ER is quieter since it sits behind business class rather than near high traffic areas.

In economy class, both variants feature Safran Weber seats in a ten-abreast layout. Certain rows provide extra legroom for an additional fee under Main Cabin Extra: row twenty on the -300ER and rows seventeen or twenty-six on the -200ER stand out as having more space and less noise from galleys or lavatories compared to other premium economy seats.

For those who do not pay for Main Cabin Extra seating, standard economy offers thirty-one inches of legroom throughout most of both cabins. Some window-section rows only have two seats instead of three—such as rows twenty-five and thirty-six through thirty-nine on the -200ER—giving passengers either more side space or just one seatmate per row.

As American Airlines updates its long-haul fleet with new configurations and phases out first class on certain jets, travelers can expect changes in seat selection options going forward.

"There is no doubt, however, that the product is roomier than business class, with more personalized service and upgraded amenities."
