Bjorn Tore Larsen, CEO | Norse Atlantic Airways

Arendal-based Norse Atlantic Airways has reported a 27% increase in passenger revenue for the second quarter of 2025, supported by a record load factor of 97% and a 36% year-over-year growth in passenger numbers. CEO Bjørn Tore Larsen said, "The success is due to the airline’s commercial model and enhanced operational efficiency."

Despite these gains, Norse Atlantic posted a net loss of $6 million. However, its earnings-before-interest-and-taxes (EBIT) improved to $4 million, and it holds $24 million in cash. The company points to forward bookings and new charter agreements as positive indicators for future performance.

The airline's load factor stands out compared to industry averages, with most full-service carriers typically reporting between 70% and 90%. Norse also achieved an 8% rise in revenue-per-available-seat-kilometer (PRASK) and an 18% increase in available-seat-kilometers (ASKs). These results suggest improvements in yield management.

Norse Atlantic began operations three years ago and has faced financial challenges since its launch. The company has been criticized for following the strategy of Norwegian's long-haul operations, which previously failed. However, recent results indicate progress in refining its approach.

In addition to scheduled flights, Norse is generating revenue by leasing aircraft. Currently, one Boeing 787-9 is leased to IndiGo, India's largest airline. The company plans to transfer five more aircraft to IndiGo, leaving half its fleet operating on its own network. This strategy provides steady income during periods when transatlantic demand is low.

Widebody aircraft are increasingly being used as services rather than assets by airlines facing seasonal fluctuations in travel demand. By entering the ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, Insurance) market, Norse aims to secure stable income streams.

Norse Atlantic was recently recognized as the best low-cost airline for value in northern Europe by SkyTrax. While the carrier continues to report losses and maintains a modest cash balance, it remains focused on diversifying revenue sources through partnerships such as those with IndiGo and P&O Cruises during off-peak seasons.

Most of Norse’s routes connect Europe with the United States. In this market segment, premium airlines like Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have seen greater financial success. Norse offers a lower-cost service with fewer amenities and faces challenges from current market dynamics. The company plans to continue refining its business model while maintaining alternative revenue streams.
