American Airlines will begin a new transcontinental route between Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in North Carolina and Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) in California. The weekly service is set to start on December 20, 2025, and will continue until April 18, 2026. The route will be operated on Saturdays using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 172 seats.

The introduction of this route comes as Palm Springs experiences rising demand from visitors, with the city noted for its architecture, golf courses, and events such as the Coachella Festival. In 2025, Palm Springs International Airport has already set five monthly passenger records and has reported consistent year-over-year growth each month. In July alone, passenger traffic at PSP increased by 11% compared to the same period in 2024.

Harry Barrett, Jr., Executive Director of Aviation at Palm Springs International Airport, said: “This new connection builds on our momentum, adding even more nonstop access between the Coachella Valley and the East Coast. Every new route creates more opportunities for our community, our visitors, and our economy.”

Charlotte serves as a major hub for American Airlines on the East Coast. The airline operates about 90% of all departures from CLT. Alongside the new Palm Springs flight, American Airlines is adding other routes from Charlotte: a nonstop flight to Albuquerque International Sunport Airport (ABQ) in New Mexico beginning October 3, 2025—which will run for ten days during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta—and daily nonstop flights to Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) starting December 19, 2025 with CRJ-700 aircraft. On that same date, flights will also commence between CLT and Vail Eagle County Regional Airport using Airbus A319 aircraft.

American Airlines is also expanding internationally with six new summer routes for 2026. These include seasonal transatlantic flights from Dallas-Fort Worth to Athens and Zurich; an extended summer service from Dallas-Fort Worth to Buenos Aires; Miami to Milan year-round; and Philadelphia to Budapest and Prague.

The Miami-Milan Malpensa route marks a return since it was discontinued at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This launch follows another recent addition between Miami and Rome Fiumicino Airport.

Robert Isom remains CEO of American Airlines. The carrier is part of the oneworld alliance and operates several hubs across major U.S. cities including Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles International Airport, Miami International Airport, New York JFK Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
