California-based JetZero has announced a partnership with SHZ Advanced Technologies to develop liquid hydrogen storage and distribution systems for its blended-wing airliner. The collaboration is aimed at advancing hydrogen propulsion as a potential alternative to traditional jet fuel in commercial aviation.

JetZero's aircraft departs from conventional designs by using a blended-wing structure, which merges the wings and fuselage into a single lifting surface. This design is expected to reduce drag, improve fuel efficiency, and provide more internal space for passenger amenities or fuel tanks. The additional space is particularly important when considering the bulkier requirements of cryogenically cooled liquid hydrogen storage compared to standard jet fuel.

Hydrogen presents significant engineering challenges due to its flammability and the need for extremely low-temperature storage. Addressing these issues requires complex safety protocols, advanced sensors, and reliable distribution systems within the aircraft. SHZ’s expertise in cryogenic technology will support JetZero’s efforts to develop effective storage solutions tailored for aviation needs.

Integrating hydrogen systems also means ensuring compliance with strict aviation safety standards. “By focusing on these issues early in its development cycle, JetZero is attempting to position itself ahead of competitors exploring similar technologies,” according to company statements.

The new partnership does not address broader infrastructure concerns related to hydrogen-powered flight. Widespread adoption would require airports to build new refueling and storage facilities—a process that could demand considerable investment and time.

JetZero aims to introduce a demonstrator aircraft by the end of this decade, positioning itself as part of global efforts toward reducing carbon emissions in aviation. Governments worldwide are increasingly pressuring airlines and manufacturers to adopt cleaner energy sources, making projects like JetZero’s relevant for future short- or medium-haul flights.

The company is working with multiple partners beyond SHZ as it continues raising awareness and funding for its initiatives. Major customers listed include Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and the United States Air Force.

While sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and electric propulsion are currently leading alternatives under development—SAF already being used by some airlines—hydrogen remains less developed but offers significant promise as an option for decarbonizing commercial flight.
