Boeing’s Dreamliner becomes best-selling widebody jet with more than one billion passengers

Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner has become the world’s best-selling widebody passenger jet, with more than 2,600 orders from over 89 carriers. The aircraft is noted for its extended range, fuel efficiency, and flexibility to operate both short and long-haul routes. Since entering service in 2011, the Dreamliner fleet of over 1,175 airplanes has flown nearly five million flights and carried more than one billion passengers across more than 85 countries and 520 airports.

The Boeing 787 was designed to help airlines open new markets by providing operational efficiency on longer routes as well as high-density shorter legs. The aircraft uses composite aerostructures and modern technology to reduce weight and fuel consumption compared to earlier Boeing jets. According to Scott Stocker, Boeing 787 program vice president and general manager:

"This milestone would not have been possible without the trust and confidence of our customers in operating the 787, and we are incredibly grateful for each of them. The 787 Dreamliner family was designed to connect people and places like never before.

Flying over 1 billion passengers in this relatively short time is a testament to how the airplane has delivered on its promises to transform air travel with operational versatility, efficiency and comfort. This achievement reflects the dedication, talent and innovation of the teammates and partners who have brought the 787 family to life. To every operator flying the 787 and every one of the 1 billion passengers who have flown on a Dreamliner, thank you."

Boeing reports that demand for the Dreamliner remains strong. In May 2025, Qatar Airways placed its largest widebody order ever with firm orders for 130 Boeing 787s along with other models; negotiations are also ongoing for potential sales of up to 50 units to Chinese airlines despite current trade tensions between China and the United States. At present, All Nippon Airways (ANA) operates the largest fleet of Dreamliners at 86 aircraft.

Compared with older models such as the Boeing 767 or Boeing 777—which have sold around two thousand units—the Dreamliner’s popularity continues to grow due in part to lower operating costs, reduced maintenance downtime, quieter operation around airports thanks to modified aerodynamic surfaces, improved cabin features like larger windows and better lighting options, as well as enhanced air quality systems.

Trade disputes between China and the US have impacted deliveries: Chinese airlines have shifted some orders toward Airbus because of retaliatory tariffs on US imports. As a result, Boeing has redirected some completed aircraft originally intended for Chinese customers toward buyers in other regions including India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

Despite production issues affecting other programs such as the Boeing 737 MAX or 777X, revenue from continued Dreamliner deliveries has helped stabilize Boeing’s finances during recent years.

The design of the Dreamliner incorporates sustainable practices—such as manufacturing at a net-zero emission facility—and includes materials that can be recycled after their service life ends.

The first delivery took place on September 25th, 2011; since then over one thousand aircraft have been delivered worldwide.
