Bill Astling, Founding CEO | Koala Airlines

Koala Airlines, a new entrant in the Australian aviation market, has confirmed leases for three Boeing 737 MAX aircraft as it prepares to launch operations by 2026. The airline expects to receive its first aircraft by July or August next year and aims to begin flights before the end of 2026.

Bill Astling, Chief Executive Officer of Koala Airlines, told Australian Aviation that the carrier has obtained its Air Operators Certificate. The company plans to expand its fleet gradually, targeting up to 20 aircraft within several years of operation. Astling noted the challenges faced by start-up airlines in acquiring planes when competing with larger carriers but said Koala is working on securing additional aircraft beyond the initial three.

The airline intends to focus on routes with established demand, primarily serving tourists and leisure travelers. Unlike previous start-ups such as Bonza—which targeted unique point-to-point markets—Koala will compete directly with major players like Qantas and Virgin Australia on high-traffic routes between cities such as Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.

“We’re going where the demand is – it’s not going to be a Bonza thing. We’ve had a couple of Bonza airports approach us, and we’re looking at that. Essentially, we’re focusing more on tourists and on the tourism industry, rather than any business class or any sort of corporate deals," Astling said.

While specific destinations have not been disclosed, Koala Airlines is about 15 months away from launching services. The company does not plan to undercut major carriers on price—a strategy that contributed to difficulties for earlier airlines like Rex—but instead hopes to become a feeder carrier for inbound international tourists arriving at Australia's main gateway airports.

According to Astling, China represents a significant opportunity; more than 1.8 million Chinese tourists visit Australia annually, with most arriving through Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, Melbourne Airport, or Brisbane Airport. Several Chinese airlines serve these hubs (including Air China and China Southern), providing potential partners for Koala's domestic connections.

The airline also plans to introduce an advanced technology platform supported by artificial intelligence designed to optimize booking systems and operational efficiency across logistics and maintenance functions.

Koala Airlines’ management team brings experience from global carriers such as Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific, Air India, and Qatar Airways. Recruitment continues for key positions including Chief Financial Officer and Head of Commercial.
