Federal Express Corporation has announced an expansion and upgrade of its gateway facility at Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan. The project aims to address the growing logistics needs of customers and businesses in Eastern Japan.

The new facility will be about twice the size of the current one, covering approximately 8,500 square meters and consisting of two warehouse buildings. One building will feature an advanced sorting system designed to handle higher parcel volumes, including those from cross-border e-commerce activities. The other building will be dedicated to freight shipments, offering more space for handling imports and exports as well as streamlined truck operations. FedEx expects the new gateway to open in phases between late 2026 and 2027.

Kei Alan Kubota, managing director of FedEx Japan, said: “Improving our operational efficiency at this key gateway in Japan is vital to remain adaptable to today’s varied shipping requirements and volumes. The planned enhancements are aligned with FedEx’s business strategy to strengthen our freight offerings and establish the network for what’s next. The new facility at Narita International Airport, which has played a vital role in our operations since we began operations in Japan, is a testament of our strong commitment to facilitating cross-border trade and optimizing the country’s supply chain capabilities.”

FedEx reported steady growth in shipment volume at Narita International Airport. In 2024, inbound and outbound shipments increased by about 4.5% compared to the previous year and were up 25% over 2019 levels.

Freight remains a significant part of air transport in Japan. According to data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Civil Aviation Bureau, average international air cargo weights per shipment in 2022 were 356 kg for exports and 436 kg for imports. Import weights have consistently surpassed export weights across various product categories. Machinery and equipment make up most of this cargo traffic—65.9% of total export weight and 63.1% of total import weight—with food products averaging much heavier individual shipments than other categories.

FedEx operates two major gateways in Japan: one at Narita International Airport serving Eastern Japan and another at Kansai International Airport for Western Japan. These connect customers across 220 countries and territories through an extensive network.
