FedEx has announced plans to expand and enhance its gateway facilities at Narita International Airport. The project aims to increase FedEx’s transport capacity and better serve the changing logistics needs of customers in eastern Japan.

The new gateway facility will be about twice the size of the current one, covering approximately 8,500 square meters and consisting of two buildings. One building, located in Cargo Building 1, will introduce a higher-performance sorting system for handling parcels from cross-border e-commerce. The other building, in Cargo Building 3, will be renovated as a dedicated facility for large and heavy cargo. This space will streamline export and import cargo handling, aircraft loading preparations, and truck loading and unloading operations. FedEx expects to begin phased operations at the new facilities between late 2026 and 2027.

Cargo volume handled by FedEx at Narita International Airport has been steadily increasing. In 2024, there was an increase of about 4.5% compared to the previous year, with a rise of around 25% since 2019.

Kei Kubota, Managing Director of FedEx in Japan, said:

Heavy cargo represents a significant portion of international air freight in Japan. According to data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s Air Cargo Statistics Report (https://www.mlit.go.jp/common/001599961.pdf), the average weight per shipment in 2022 was 356 kg for exports and 436 kg for imports. Imports tend to outweigh exports across categories; food products are particularly notable at an average of 890 kg per shipment. Other items such as clothing, pharmaceuticals, non-metal mineral products, metal products, and medical machinery also exceed an average weight of 500 kg per shipment. Machinery accounts for roughly two-thirds of both export (65.9%) and import (63.1%) weights in international air cargo.

FedEx currently operates through two main airports in Japan—Narita International Airport serving eastern Japan’s cargo needs and Kansai International Airport serving western Japan—and connects customers to more than 220 countries and territories using its global network.
