Citi has expanded its ThankYou Rewards program, allowing holders of select no-annual-fee credit cards to transfer points to American Airlines AAdvantage. This change follows Citi’s recent move to add American Airlines as a transfer partner, making it the last major domestic airline loyalty program to join a major credit card issuer’s network.

Previously, only Citi cards with an annual fee—such as the Citi Strata Premier Card and Citi Strata Elite℠ Card—offered the ability to transfer points to AAdvantage. Now, customers with the Citi Custom Cash, Citi Double Cash Card, and Citi Strata℠ Card can also transfer their ThankYou points to AAdvantage at a 1:0.7 ratio. For every 1,000 ThankYou points transferred from these no-annual-fee cards, cardholders will receive 700 AAdvantage miles.

The option to transfer at a 1:1 ratio remains available for those with annual-fee cards like the Citi Prestige (no longer open to new applicants), Citi Strata Elite, and Citi Strata Premier.

A spokesperson commented on the development: "I am delighted by Citi's announcement of adding American Airlines as a transfer partner to its no-annual-fee cards. This is a great deal for cardholders who may not be ready to pay an annual fee yet but want access to a valuable transfer partner that has numerous sweet spot redemptions."

The reduced transfer ratio aligns with other partners on no-annual-fee cards such as JetBlue TrueBlue. The addition provides more flexibility for cardholders who prefer not paying an annual fee but still want access to transferable rewards.

For those seeking maximum value or full transfer ratios across all partners, experts recommend considering one of Citi’s annual-fee options.

This update gives more redemption choices for users of eligible no-annual-fee cards while maintaining incentives for premium card membership.
