Southwest Airlines will update its policy for plus-size passengers who purchase two seats, effective January 27, 2026. The changes coincide with the airline’s shift from open seating to assigned seating and online seat selection.

Previously, Southwest allowed passengers who needed an extra seat to buy one in advance and request a refund afterward. This long-standing practice meant that travelers ultimately paid for only one seat. The policy was considered straightforward and less stressful for customers, but did not guarantee adjacent seats due to the airline’s open-seating system.

With the move to assigned seating, Southwest says customers of size will be able to select two adjacent seats in advance. “As such, this is actually a positive for customers of size at it guarantees an adjacent seat, thereby reducing confusion and delays,” according to the company. Customers purchasing fares that do not include seat selection can still reserve adjacent seats by calling Southwest directly.

However, other aspects of the updated policy add new requirements. Passengers must now ensure their flight departs with at least one open seat available for refund eligibility, and both seats must be purchased in the same fare class. Refund requests must also be submitted within 90 days of travel.

The change is expected to streamline boarding by reducing last-minute scrambles for preferred seats and easing staff workload at the gate. It also clarifies arrangements for both passengers and crew before takeoff.

Southwest has been making broader changes since Elliott Investment Management acquired a stake in the airline in 2024. These have included adopting assigned seating like other major carriers and reconfiguring aircraft interiors with extra-legroom options as part of efforts to improve profitability following pandemic-era challenges.

In addition to updating its cabin practices, Southwest has announced new interline agreements with Icelandair, China Airlines, and EVA Air as it seeks closer alignment with industry standards on international cooperation.

Southwest remains based in Dallas and operates as a low-cost carrier across several major U.S. airports including Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport; Dallas Love Field; Denver International Airport; Harry Reid International Airport; Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport; Houston Hobby Airport; Los Angeles International Airport; Midway International Airport; Oakland International Airport; Orlando International Airport; and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Robert Jordan continues as CEO of Southwest Airlines.
