Frontier Airlines has announced a significant expansion of its flight network, adding 20 new or returning routes that will connect 14 cities across the United States, Mexico, and Central America. The move is part of the airline’s ongoing strategy to increase its presence in South Texas, South Florida, and Michigan.

The most notable changes will be seen at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), which will gain eight new Frontier routes. Destinations from Houston include New Orleans, Fort Lauderdale, Guatemala City, San Pedro Sula in Honduras, Philadelphia, and El Salvador. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) will see six additional flights, while Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) will add five more routes.

Other cities gaining new connections include Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD), Miami International Airport (MIA), Cancun International Airport (CUN), La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City (GUA), Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport in San Pedro Sula (SAP), and El Salvador International Airport (SAL).

Frontier did not announce any route reductions or eliminations as part of this update. However, adjustments to flight schedules are common following major network changes. Some of the newly announced routes are returning after previous suspensions; for example, service from BWI and DTW to Cancun was last offered in 2024 but was discontinued due to fluctuating demand.

The carrier’s expansion at IAH marks a recent shift in its operations. Prior to this announcement, Frontier was already planning to offer 158% more departures out of Houston than it did two years ago. This comes as IAH continues to serve as a major hub for United Airlines.

In addition to route changes, Frontier has made several updates to its loyalty program and fare structure over the past year. The airline introduced an UpFront Plus seating option with a blocked middle seat—described by the company as similar to European-style business class—and restructured its fare bundles.

Frontier also updated its loyalty program by adding a companion pass for travelers who achieve Platinum-level status. Last week, the airline began offering automatic Gold status for $69 to members of Spirit Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines or JetBlue loyalty programs. Gold status on Frontier will soon include complimentary upgrades—when available—to first-class seats expected later this year.

"Frontier's deep ties to Houston are a much more recent development," according to the release. "Even prior to Tuesday's announcement, the ultra-low-cost carrier was set to offer 158% more departures out of IAH than it did just two years ago."

The latest changes come amid financial pressures faced by budget airlines like Frontier as they compete with larger carriers for both leisure and business travelers.
