RTX wins $2.9 billion Navy contract for F-35 engines

The United States Navy has awarded a $2.9 billion contract to Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of RTX Corporation, for the production of 141 F135 engines. These engines are intended for use in the F-35 Lightning II aircraft operated by the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and several allied nations. Deliveries under this contract are scheduled through February 2028.

Funding for the order is split between domestic and international sources. Approximately $1.27 billion comes from the Navy and Air Force budgets, while foreign partner nation sales contribute an additional $750 million.

Alongside this announcement, Boeing received a $315 million order for F/A-18 landing gear repairs, and Lockheed Martin was awarded $27 million for maintenance procedures.

The F135 engine remains the exclusive powerplant for the F-35 fighter jet. The ongoing demand for these jets supports recurring contracts for Pratt & Whitney and provides continued revenue opportunities beyond individual deliveries due to upgrade programs.

Investor response to the news was positive. RTX Corporation shares rose about 2.1% during Tuesday trading following the announcement of the deal. This comes after RTX reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings with margin expansion in key segments. Since July, RTX’s price-to-earnings ratio has increased from roughly 32 to around 35, and year-to-date returns have exceeded 37%.

The new contract is seen as a sign of sustained confidence from the Pentagon in both the F135 platform and Pratt & Whitney’s management team.
