International flights at Nuuk Airport in Greenland have been suspended due to issues related to security procedures. The suspension was announced yesterday evening, and international operations remain halted today.

Danish authorities highlighted concerns with the airport's security screening processes for passengers on international flights. Flightradar24 reported that "the supplementary training of staff responsible for screening international travelers does not fully meet current requirements." Anders Windfeldt from the Danish transport ministry stated, "We have issued Greenland Airports an injunction to comply with aviation safety rules at Nuuk Airport, where we have identified a number of insufficient safety measures." Windfeldt added that international departures from Nuuk Airport will be "temporarily suspended until security personnel receive the necessary training."

The suspension has led to operational disruptions for airlines serving the airport. United Airlines flight UA80 from Newark Liberty International Airport turned back to New Jersey after learning about the situation, and today's return flight UA81 has also been canceled. Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) canceled both legs of its Airbus A320neo-operated service between Copenhagen Kastrup Airport and Nuuk, affecting around 350 passengers. Domestic flights at Nuuk continue as scheduled.

Nuuk Airport had recently experienced growth following an expansion program, including the start of United’s direct flights from Newark and Air Greenland operating its flagship Airbus A330-800 on routes to the facility. The recent expansion had positioned Nuuk as a growing hub for international travel in Greenland.

However, operational challenges have occurred before. Recently, there was a three-hour delay to a United flight after security staff left their posts for reindeer hunting. It is not clear if this previous incident is connected to the current disruption.
