Boeing's 777X program, which includes the passenger 777-8 and 777-9 models as well as the cargo-focused 777-8F, is moving through an extensive flight testing phase before entering commercial service. Five prototype aircraft have been built for this process. Alongside standard testing, Boeing also uses these planes for airshow displays at events like the Seafair Air Show and golf tournaments sponsored by the company.

The creation of these displays involves a dedicated team of pilots and engineers who focus on safety while showcasing the aircraft’s capabilities. According to Boeing, "a team of pilots and engineers who create air show displays (...) that highlight the design and capabilities of Boeing’s commercial airplanes." These routines are carefully designed to ensure both safety and spectacle.

Sean Richardson, a Flight Test Engineer at Boeing, explained: "Our routines allow us to demonstrate how quiet the 777-9 is while showcasing its huge, beautiful wings. We approach designing the routines like any other engineering flight test, with safety as No. 1. We create maneuvers that appear extreme while operating within a strict set of constraints, including airshow rules."

Preparation for these demonstrations begins in simulators before pilots practice at remote airfields. Captain Mike Kingen described this process: once maneuvers are agreed upon, pilots "move to the simulator to test [their] ideas." After simulation work is complete, further practice takes place away from public view.

Performing at venues such as Seafair presents unique challenges; for example, flying over a lake adds complexity for pilots during their routines.

For those involved in organizing and performing these displays, there is significant satisfaction in seeing positive audience reactions. Captain Korhan Orgun commented that "seeing all the families and kids waving" makes it special.

With large crowds attending modern airshows, Boeing’s test pilots perform in front of thousands but also see it as an opportunity to connect with their community. Captain Mike Kingen noted that such events are a chance for "our neighbors and friends to see the great work our teams do at Boeing."

Reflecting on his experience growing up attending Seafair Air Show events and now participating professionally with his own children present, Sean Richardson said it is "so special to see the crowd enjoying the display, taking pictures, and applauding our routine." He added: "you couldn’t ask for anything cooler."

Boeing was founded on July 15, 1916. The company is headquartered in Chicago and led by CEO Kelly Ortberg.
