American Airlines has announced plans to open a Flagship Lounge and expand its Admirals Club facilities at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), the airline’s second-busiest hub. The move aims to address persistent overcrowding in the existing lounges and bring a premium experience for business-class passengers and AAdvantage elite members.

Charlotte is currently American’s only international hub without a higher-end lounge option for these travelers. The two Admirals Clubs at CLT often reach capacity, leading to calls from frequent flyers for more space and improved amenities.

The airline did not disclose specific timelines or detailed construction plans for the new Flagship Lounge or the expanded Admirals Club areas. According to American, further details will be shared at a later date.

“These improvements will introduce a premium experience for our Flagship customers and provide more space in our Admirals Club lounges,” said Heather Garboden, American’s chief customer officer. “As an airline, we're committed to meeting the needs of our customers, and we're excited to continue to invest in our lounges at CLT.”

The planned investments are expected to significantly increase lounge space at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, which is one of the busiest airports in American’s network after Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

Access to the Flagship Lounge is reserved for passengers flying in high-end cabins marketed as Flagship or those with AAdvantage Platinum status (or Oneworld Sapphire) traveling on eligible long-haul trips. Standard Admirals Club memberships do not grant entry into these premium lounges.

American operates numerous long-haul flights out of Charlotte, including summer service to eight European destinations. Earlier this month, the airline also introduced Provisions by Admirals Club, a grab-and-go concept designed to alleviate crowding at its current facilities.

Flagship Lounges are already available at all other domestic hubs where American offers long-haul international flights, such as Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), where its newest location opened earlier this year.
