A Polish Air Force F-16 crashed during a rehearsal for the Radom Airshow on August 28, 2025, resulting in the death of the pilot. The incident occurred near Radom, where preparations were underway for one of Central Europe's major air shows. The event typically draws thousands of visitors and is a key occasion for showcasing Poland’s military aviation capabilities.

The Polish Air Force confirmed that the crash took place as the pilot was practicing maneuvers ahead of the airshow. Video footage circulated online showed the aircraft descending rapidly with its afterburner engaged before impact. Member of Parliament Adam Szłapka stated via X that Poland’s Prime Minister traveled to the crash site as an investigation commenced.

Authorities responded quickly, securing the area and dispatching emergency services to handle fire risks and ensure public safety. No injuries were reported among civilians on the ground.

The pilot was identified as Major Maciej “Slab” Krakowian, who had more than 1,000 hours flying F-16s and served as an instructor at the 31st Tactical Air Base near Poznan. He had participated in both domestic and international exercises.

Following the accident, rehearsals for the airshow were temporarily suspended while safety checks were carried out. Military officials emphasized that all precautions would be taken to prevent further incidents but did not confirm whether all scheduled performances would continue.

The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon remains central to Poland’s fighter fleet, with 35 F-16Cs and 12 F-16Ds currently in service. These aircraft are regularly used in NATO missions across Europe and have formed the core of Poland's combat aviation since their introduction in the mid-2000s. Poland has also begun receiving Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning IIs, having ordered 32 units to further modernize its air force.

In 2024, Poland approved a $3.8 billion program to upgrade its existing F-16 fleet through a partnership with Lockheed Martin, set to take place between 2028 and 2038.

The Radom Air Show is recognized for displaying both advanced technology and Polish pilots’ professionalism amid ongoing regional security concerns. While accidents at such events are rare, they highlight both the risks involved in military aviation training and the need for stringent safety measures.

Military officials have indicated that Thursday’s crash will lead to a comprehensive review of safety protocols at future shows.
