Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, especially the 787-9 variant, remains a key player in the widebody aircraft market. As of mid-2025, Boeing reports a backlog of 993 unfulfilled orders out of 2,199 firm orders for the Dreamliner, making it the best-selling widebody jet to date. In total, 1,206 Dreamliners have been delivered since its entry into service in 2011.

Deliveries for each variant stand at 399 for the 787-8, 681 for the 787-9, and 126 for the 787-10. The Dreamliner has continued to outperform Airbus’ A350 in both orders and deliveries; by comparison, Airbus has delivered 669 A350s out of a total of 1,428 ordered.

In recent years, production rates have fluctuated due to various challenges. Before the pandemic in 2019, Boeing delivered 158 Dreamliners. This figure dropped significantly during the pandemic: only 53 were delivered in 2020 and just 14 in 2021 after Boeing shut down its Seattle assembly line. Deliveries started recovering with 31 aircraft shipped in 2022 and then rising to about half of pre-pandemic levels with around 73 deliveries in 2023. However, overall commercial aircraft deliveries remained subdued; Boeing’s total output was highest in recent years at 528 aircraft in 2023, compared to between 748 and 763 annually from 2015–2017 and peaking at 806 units in 2018.

For the first half of 2025, Boeing delivered an estimated 45 Dreamliners. The company plans to increase production rates: “According to Flight Plan, Boeing plans to ramp up production of the 787 to seven aircraft monthly by the end of 2025.” At that rate, annual output would be about 84 aircraft per year. Leeham News reported on a $1 billion expansion at Boeing’s Charleston facility that will double final assembly line capacity for the model by completion in 2028, enabling potential future production rates as high as sixteen per month or roughly 192 planes annually.

One challenge facing current deliveries involves Lufthansa’s Allegris seating configuration lacking FAA certification. As a result, some already-built jets remain undelivered.

The popularity among variants is shifting away from the original model: new orders are focused on the larger and longer-range versions. Only eight new orders for the smaller 787-8 have been placed since 2020, with most remaining open orders attributed to Emirates.

Looking ahead, production is expected to recover further by 2028, although trade disputes continue to present risks. There have been recent developments affecting international sales—China banned its airlines from accepting new Boeings earlier this year but may place significant new orders soon.

In summary, while annual production rates are still below pre-pandemic levels and subject to ongoing regulatory and geopolitical uncertainties, Boeing is investing heavily in expanding capacity and expects output growth over coming years.
