Qantas will introduce its new Airbus A321XLR aircraft on routes between Sydney and Melbourne, as well as Sydney and Perth, starting in mid-September. The airline is the first in Oceania to operate this aircraft type. The A321XLR has a range of 5,400 miles (8,700 kilometers), which is over 1,860 miles (3,000 kilometers) longer than the Boeing 737. This increased range is expected to allow Qantas to consider new international routes to the Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia.

The first two A321XLRs delivered to Qantas are configured for domestic and short-haul international flights. These planes will initially be used on the two noted domestic routes but will gradually be introduced on other routes. Qantas faces competition from Virgin Australia and its own subsidiary Jetstar on these busy domestic services.

Qantas Chief Executive Officer Vanessa Hudson said: “Not only will the A321XLRs help us serve the corporate market travelling between Perth and the east coast of Australia, they will also allow us to expand flying on existing routes into South East Asia and open up new possibilities like Perth-India and Adelaide-Singapore."

The airline operates one of the busiest domestic networks globally, especially along what is known as the 'Golden Triangle'—the routes connecting Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne. These are typically served by narrow-body aircraft but can see wide-body planes during peak periods.

Qantas has placed a firm order for 214 new aircraft as part of a multi-billion-dollar investment aimed at modernizing its fleet. As of June 2025, only 32 have been delivered. The introduction of the A321XLR supports plans to retire older Boeing 737-800 jets and improve passenger experience.

For passengers flying domestically or on short-haul international sectors with these new aircraft, seatback entertainment will not be available; instead, onboard WiFi enables streaming via the Qantas app. From 2028 onward, long-haul configured A321XLRs will offer lie-flat business class seats and seatback screens for a more premium experience.

According to ch-aviation data:

- Two A321XLRs have already been delivered.

- An additional order for 20 more was announced recently.

- Of these new orders, 16 aircraft will feature lie-flat business class seats—the first time such seating appears on a Qantas narrow-body jet.

This brings Qantas’ total planned fleet of A321XLRs to 50.

The development of this fleet is central to Qantas’ broader renewal program designed to phase out aging Boeing 737s while enabling service expansion both within Australia—such as potential new links from Perth—and internationally with possible connections like Perth–India or Adelaide–Singapore.

Qantas is a founding member of the oneworld alliance and remains the largest carrier in Oceania by fleet size and network reach. It operates flights across all seven continents—including seasonal charters to Antarctica—and serves over 60 destinations domestically while holding about 60% share of Australia's aviation market.

The airline’s current fleet includes various Airbus models (A330, A380, A321XLR) alongside Boeing types (737 and 787). Through Project Sunrise, Qantas aims to pioneer non-stop flights from Sydney to London or New York in coming years.
