Lufthansa is set to begin operating its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner equipped with the new Allegris cabin in October, although most of the business class seats will not be available due to ongoing certification issues. The aircraft will be introduced on the Frankfurt to Toronto route starting in mid-October, but only four out of 28 business class seats—specifically the front row suites—will be offered for sale as these are the only ones certified so far.

The airline has faced delays in receiving over a dozen newly built 787s from Boeing because of these certification problems affecting the business cabin. The first Allegris-equipped 787-9 was ferried from Everett to Frankfurt recently, and Lufthansa expects several more deliveries in the coming months.

Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, stated, "I'm particularly pleased that we can now offer our guests the Allegris premium experience in Frankfurt. With today's arrival of the Boeing 787-9, the modernization of our long-haul fleet at our largest hub is receiving a major boost."

The new Allegris business suites feature amenities such as 27-inch screens, chest-high walls, private wardrobes, and minibars. Despite these upgrades, only a limited number of passengers will initially have access to them due to regulatory hurdles.

Lufthansa anticipates a significant increase in its Dreamliner fleet size by the end of 2025. The airline expects nine additional aircraft deliveries before year-end, which would result in a new delivery approximately every two weeks and triple its current Dreamliner fleet. In total, Lufthansa has ordered 29 new Boeing 787-9s. Once all are delivered, this model will become Lufthansa’s second-largest widebody type after the Airbus A350.

The introduction of Allegris on other aircraft types has also encountered setbacks. When first launched on Airbus A350-900s during summer 2024, certification delays meant that even first class suites could not be used immediately; they became available only later that year.

Ritter expressed optimism that full certification for the 787-9 business cabin would be achieved before year-end but acknowledged there could be further delays. The rollout timeline for Allegris has shifted multiple times since it was originally planned for debut with the Boeing 777-9 in 2020 and then rescheduled for introduction on A350s in 2023.

While some passengers have welcomed the new cabins, feedback from Lufthansa's cabin crew has highlighted design concerns—particularly regarding storage space and table arrangements in certain suite configurations—as well as reductions in staffing levels for premium cabins.

Lufthansa operates as a full-service carrier with hubs at Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport and was founded in 1953.
