London Heathrow continues to lead the world in long-haul scheduled passenger flights, with an average of 251 daily departures planned for September. This figure is up by four compared to the same month last year, according to data from Cirium Diio. The airport's high demand and limited slots contribute to its top position, and more long-haul carriers are expected to begin operations there.

Long-haul flights are defined as those covering at least 3,000 statute miles each way, a standard also used by United Airlines. Schedule analysis shows that 37% of all departures from London Heathrow in September will be long-haul, the highest proportion among European airports and higher than any other entry in the global top ten list. Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Frankfurt follow but with lower shares of long-haul traffic.

Despite its dominance in long-haul operations, British Airways accounts for only about one-third of these flights at Heathrow. The diversity of airlines operating at the airport means that several foreign carriers also play a significant role in its international network. Discussions continue over potential expansion at Heathrow, including a possible new runway, which could affect British Airways' market share if realized.

Other major airports on the list include New York JFK with 155 daily long-haul departures (26% of total), Dubai with 153 (25%), Paris CDG with 145 (23%), Doha with 121 (34%), Frankfurt with 113 (17%), Singapore with 103 (22%), Madrid with 102 (18%), Amsterdam with 100 (15%), and Los Angeles International Airport with 92 (13%).

Doha has moved up from sixth place last September to fifth this year due to a six percent increase in long-haul flights. It now sees 121 daily takeoffs compared to last year's 114. New services from Shenzhen Airlines and Virgin Australia have contributed to this growth. Virgin Australia now connects Doha to Brisbane, Perth, Sydney, and soon Melbourne. China Southern has increased its Guangzhou-Doha service frequency, while Philippine Airlines has expanded its Manila-Doha route from three weekly flights to daily service. Qatar Airways itself has added or resumed several routes over the past year and increased frequencies on existing ones.

Madrid Barajas Airport is now ranked eighth globally for long-haul activity after seeing an eleven percent rise in such departures—from 92 daily last September to 102 this year. This growth pushed Madrid ahead of Amsterdam on the list; before the pandemic in September 2019, it was ranked twelfth globally. Iberia’s long-haul schedule grew mainly through increased flight frequencies rather than new destinations—Tokyo Narita being a notable addition since October 2024—and benefited from new Airbus A321XLR aircraft.

Several airlines began new services at Madrid during this period: Azul started flying in June 2025; Capital Airlines joined in January; Ethiopian Airlines began operations in July; JetBlue started services in May; Sichuan Airlines commenced flights in April; and Uzbekistan Airways also launched routes that month. American Airlines increased its presence following the launch of Chicago O'Hare flights and now operates six daily departures from Madrid.

Overall, the world's top ten airports for long-haul flights saw their combined number of daily departures rise by three percent over the past year—from 1,296 last September to a record high of 1,336 this year.
