A Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner originally destined for All Nippon Airways (ANA) has finally been delivered after an incident in July delayed its handover. The aircraft, with registration JA986A, was involved in a ground collision at Charleston Air Force Base-International Airport (CHS), where it struck a Breeze Airways Airbus A220-300, tail number N247BZ.

The incident occurred while the Dreamliner was taxiing for departure following final factory checks. According to Planespotters.net, the collision resulted in the 787’s wingtip cutting through the tail of the Breeze A220. The A220 had only recently joined the Breeze fleet in March and was at CHS after diverting from Norfolk International Airport (ORF) due to thunderstorms, as indicated by FlightAware data. Two passengers suffered minor injuries during the accident; further details on damages have not been disclosed by the Aviation Safety Network.

After repairs, ANA has now taken delivery of its newest 787-10. Shinya Katanozaka, President and CEO of ANA, commented on receiving the aircraft:

“The added capacity of the 787-10 provides our passengers with the most innovative and memorable flying experience, while also delivering the lowest operating cost per seat and tremendous efficiency overall.”

ANA’s fleet of Boeing Dreamliners has been expanding since first entering service in 2019. The airline is replacing older models such as its Boeing 767s and 777s—some up to two decades old—with newer Dreamliners for better fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. ANA now operates a total of 87 Dreamliners: 34 of the -8 variant, 44 of the -9, and nine of the -10.

The Boeing 787 features several design improvements over previous models, including composite aerostructures for weight reduction and fuel-efficient engines. Cabin enhancements include larger windows than any other commercial airliner and customizable LED lighting.

Breeze Airways’ damaged A220 was part of a recent purchase-leaseback deal with High Ridge Aviation (HRA). The airline has seen increased demand in recent months as it fills gaps left by competitors like Avelo Airlines amid market changes related to deportation flight boycotts. Breeze is working to expand its capacity but faces setbacks as one of its new jets remains out of service following this accident.

The affected Breeze jet was assembled at Airbus’ facility in Mobile, Alabama. While Airbus established its first maintenance facility in Canada last year, there are currently no official MRO sites set up in the United States; it remains unclear where repairs will be performed on this particular aircraft.

All Nippon Airways continues to operate as a full-service carrier based primarily at Tokyo Haneda and Narita airports since its founding in 1952 under CEO Koji Shibata.
